Dear Lev Kobrin, I am here in the States with a work visa H1B, which is valid until October 2004. My husband and daughter are with me as a dependent, they have H4 visa. For 2004-2005 academic year there is an Ph.D. program opening in Wayne University, this is a full time 4-year program, if I would be accepted they will pay the tution and stipend. My employer is sponsoring also my immigration visa and most probably on May or June 2004 I will be a permenent resident. My question is: can I change my visa from H1B to J or F to have a student visa, without jeopardizing my green card papers in process? My second question is, when I get my green card, am I obliged to work with my sponsor? and if yes how many years? Regards Lucy

Lucy, are you crazy? To change H-1 onto J or F is equal to suicide. The both lasts do not allow you to obtain a green card. Forget about this stupid step forever, please. After you have received your green card, you are not obliged to work for your current employer.
