Lev Dobri Vecher,
I'm from russia. Have been here for 7 years ( first on J1 ( don't remember if i had 2-year restriction) then on F1 -undergrad and MBA) My finace just proposed and we are getting married ( soon :))
My student visa is going to be out of status on June 15th. Its march now. I need help answering a few questions: Please if you can :)
1. Do i have enough time to file for adjustment of status and all other things and be ok to stay with him in US ?
2. is J1 going to be a problem if i did have a 2 year restriction ( i know that there is a waiver -- how long does it take? where do i file?) What should i do about the 2-year restriction-- I'm not even sure if my J-1 had a two year restriction
3. I know that a lot of things changed since Feb 2004 -- where do i file I-30 and 1-485, and advance parole, and work authorization -- Do i go to Boston local office or do i file in Service Center in Vermont?
4. Do you think that i need an attorney for my case or should my fiance and i be ok doing it all ourselves.
Please help
Thank you
Lera

it seems that you have no problems with language.
You have Internet access too.
Why wouldn't you go to USINS site and research it for yourself. You can find the most updated and relyable information. There is also a bunch of links to everything you may possibly need. You may also find out if you had a conditional status on your J1 visa, and where you should file a new application.
It may take sometime for you to read, but it is better than to waste your money for some questionable services.
Frankly, I don't think you need a attorney.
Regards.

Response for: Lera at 3/9/2004 3:33:00 PM Lev,
I found a copy of my old J1 visa from 1997 - 1998 and it did have the restriction : it said somtheing like the bearer is subject to sec212e. After that i received my F1 visa 3 or 4 times with no problem. Do you think that the 2 year residence requirement still apllies to me? Am i going to have a problem when my future husband and i submitt the paperwork? What should i answer on the application in the section where it asks about : "have you ever had a J-1 visa with the 2 year requirement that was unfulfilled"?
Thank you so much
