J-1 visa 2 year home residency requirement and Canada |
Yuri Vancouver |
If somebody, who is subject to the 2 year requirement, goes and lives (studies) in Canada for those 2 years, will it PRACTICALLY remove the 2 year requirement? I know that in theory you are supposed to return to the country of your last permanent residence. But what kind of proof of being in Russia will the State Dept. / INS ask for when issuing an immigrant visa (or adjusting status). Anyone had a similar experience?

Response for: Yuri at 10/26/2002 4:16:00 PM I've been in the States in year 2000 with visa J-1. I had to return to Russia and wait two years before being granted my next visa to the States. When I applyed for my second visa to the State the Embassy in Moscow checked my passport to see if I've been abroad during years 2001 and 2002. They also asked me to show my old passport (which expired in year 2001). Good I kept it with me, so I could prove I've been in Russia all two years.
So think carefully before taking any action. Good luck.
